(short message service)Le SMS (short message service) est un service de minimessages permettant aux utilisateurs de téléphones portables (et de smartphones à partir de 2002) de communiquer au moyen de messages textuels courts tapés sur le clavier du téléphone, avec 160 caractères maximum pour les alphabets latins et 70 caractères maximum pour les langues non latines telles que l’arabe, le chinois ou le japonais. Vu la place réduite, les messages sont souvent tapés en langage simplifié utilisant la phonétique et les abréviations. Dès son apparition, ce service enregistre un succès phénoménal. Fin 2002, le SMS a une version multimédia dénommée MMS (multimedia messaging service), qui peut être envoyé à partir d’un smartphone. -
